Questions and answers about edge banding
After a long conversation with the clients, many of them have asked some questions about edge banding. Today, when I have time, I have compiled them for everyone's reference.
1) Folding white refers to the phenomenon of whitening at the bent edge after making a small curved edge on the edge banding strip, and this whitening will not be restored after the edge banding strip is straightened again. This phenomenon is more pronounced for dark edge banding.
2) Bouncing edge, which is prone to produce popping edges when trimming the edge strip. Of course, the reason for the occurrence of jumping edges is not only due to the high content of calcium carbonate powder. When the hot melt adhesive for edge sealing is not properly mixed with the feeding speed, it can cause the edge sealing strip to not fully adhere to the board during trimming, resulting in edge jumping due to the floating of the edge sealing strip.
3) The edge glossiness of the edge banding after trimming and grinding is poor, resulting in a poor appearance effect. At present, low-quality edge banding strips on the market contain over 60% calcium carbonate powder to reduce costs. As for the different equivalent products of the same brand, it is mainly their calcium carbonate powder content.
4) Cracking, due to the high content of calcium carbonate, causes the edge banding to lack toughness and the internal structure to be loose. It will crack under slight external force, especially during transportation at low temperatures.
2、 What is adhesive backing? Can the edge banding with adhesive backing be directly adhered to the board?
Answer: Back adhesive (bridging agent) PVC cannot be directly bonded to the board very well. The quality of the back adhesive (actually not glue, but plays an intermediate bridging role, so it is also called bridging agent) directly affects the bonding effect. Especially when the weather is cold, the temperature in the workshop is relatively low, and the efficiency of hot melt adhesive and backing adhesive is greatly reduced. This is often attributed to the quality of the edge banding by furniture manufacturers. A good solution is to replace it with high-temperature hot melt adhesive with high viscosity and purity, increase the working temperature of the hot melt adhesive, raise the room temperature, and preheat the edge sealing strip (quality must be guaranteed).
3、 Why do "tablet" edge banding strips still have curvature?
Answer: The curvature of the edge banding itself should have a slight inward bend in its width direction to prevent the loss of glue during the bonding and compression of the edge banding. However, inferior edge banding is flat or even upturned, which can easily lead to poor adhesion.
4、 What material is the 3D edge banding made of?
Answer: Currently, only a few 3D edge banding products on the market are made of acrylic (with acrylic and some additives, and the proportion of acrylic is about 98%), while others are made of transparent PVC. The problem with transparent PVC is that after trimming and grinding, the transparency of its edges will be slightly reduced, making it impossible to fully achieve the 3D effect.
5、 The What should I pay attention to when choosing PVC edge banding?
Answer: There are two processes for printing patterns on PVC surfaces: printing and heat transfer film. The surface of heat transfer film is relatively glossy, and the product looks bright and layered in color. However, due to its high cost, slow transfer speed, and inconvenient color matching with the board, it has now been replaced by printing. However, the content of calcium carbonate powder in some inferior PVC edge banding strips is too high, which may cause color fading when using printing technology. Therefore, sometimes heat transfer film technology is also used.
Precautions for selecting PVC edge banding:
A: Smooth surface, no bubbles, no stretch marks, moderate glossiness.
B: The surface and back are flat, with uniform thickness and consistent width.
C: Reasonable hardness, higher elasticity, better quality, and stronger wear resistance.
D: After repairing the edges, the closer the color of the side of the edge banding is to the surface color, the better. The whitening is not obvious, and the glossiness is good. Otherwise, it is because the material used for the edge banding is too poor, which leads to an overall color mismatch in the finished furniture product.
E: The back treatment agent should be evenly applied. Generally, transparent and white treatment agents are better. Improper back treatment can lead to low bonding strength after edge sealing, or even failure to bond.
F: The color of each batch of edge banding must be consistent, and the smaller the color difference between different batches, the better the quality.
G: Trimming and cutting are not brittle and have no gaps.
H: The transparent sealing tape (adhesive paper used for sealing cardboard boxes) is pasted on the edge of the sealing tape. Use your fingers to rub back and forth several times at the position where the sealing tape is pasted, and then pull it up to check if there is any discoloration on the edge tape.
